I have always enjoyed taking black and white photographs and this is translated into my love of working with black and white wool. Felt.

A group of grevy zebra, bringing back memories of travelling to Samburu game reserve in Kenya. Thirty-five years ago I remember watching hundreds of these majestic creatures. Now they are in grave danger of becoming extinct, due to their loss of habitat, overgrazing and additional agricultural use of the land. They have also been hunted for their distinctive skins.

Sycamore Tree Sedbergh
Sycamore tree near Castlehaw Tower, a small well preserved motte and bailey castle in the town of Sedbergh, Cumbria in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
I love trees and this one stands out majestically on this hill, with the Howgill fells behind. The castle is to the right of it, built in the 11th/12th century and believed to be built from wood, as there are no stone remains.

We spent
three months staying in Sedbergh in the Yorkshire Dales from September 2015. The Howgill Fells lie between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Their velvet fingers can be seen from the M6. We often spent hours in these fells, never seeing another human being, occasionally some rough fell sheep, and if we were lucky meeting these beautiful wild horses, their tangled manes blowing in the wind. On this sunny day they crept up on Dan who was having a rest after ascending the 500 meters up to the near the calf the highest point on the Howgills.

Swaledale ewe
I photographed several Swaledale sheep at the Muker show in Swaledale, Yorkshire. This traditional agricultural show is held in the most beautiful setting and events include fell running, sheep dog trials, fiercely competitive sheep judging, and a competition for the best hand crafted walking stick. The Muker brass band entertains the crowds throughout the day.
While felting sheep breeds I have seen in Yorkshire, Cumbria and Oxford, I learnt about the fascinating and rare Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep.
The breed has only been in the UK since 2014, and can now be found in small numbers from Cornwall to Scotland.
This picture is made with Valais Blacknose sheep fleece, with the help of some merino wool for the background and the black/brown.

These beautiful gnarled oak trees were on the lower fellside footpath between Sedbergh and Cautley Spout which is England’s highest waterfall. They follow an old drovers road, used for moving livestock by walking them ‘on the hoof’. The path has been worn down over the years by constant use, and rainwater eroding the soil. The oaks lean into the path and their gnarled roots are exposed.
